The Meissen Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1710 and was the first porcelain manufactory in Europe. Originally, the porcelain came from China, but importing it was expensive. In 1709, the alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger discovered the secret of making porcelain on a kaolin basis. Meissen porcelain was born!
