Switzerland is a multilingual country, but not all Swiss are quadrilingual, and few are monolingual.
In this conference, we will address the issue of linguistic diversity in Switzerland at three levels: the community (states, territories), institutions (administration, schools) and the individual. Is multilingualism conceived and/or experienced as a juxtaposition of languages or as an integrated reality? What is the actual position of the different languages, in particular national minority languages, dialects and migrant languages? Laurent Gajo, a full professor at the University of Geneva, will base the discussion on elements of the Swiss linguistic landscape, advertisements and caricatures.
